Focus of the Workshop
The US-German Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy SOFIA is now ready for science observations. As we are rapidly approaching the first call for proposals, this 2-day workshop is to brief the German astronomical community on the current status of SOFIA and to prepare it for the forthcoming first German SOFIA open time flights in mid- 2011.
Airborne Astronomy is different in some aspects from ground-based or satellite observations. The workshop is the first and most important opportunity for participants to collect all SOFIA background information and to fully understand its program, in addition to learning the procedures of for applying for observing time.
The workshop will be an open forum to discuss the draft Call for Proposal for German Science Demonstration flights, which will be executed in early to mid summer 2011. The final call will be released on March 4, 2011. The deadline for submitting proposals is March 20, 2011.
The aim of the workshop is to familiarize German scientific community with the entre operation of SOFIA in order to enable them to write successful observing proposals. The workshop leaves plenty of room for stimulating discussions about science with SOFIA, triggering new Ideas and possibly combining efforts. We suggest that participants propagate the information and material provided at the workshop to their home institutes.
